History of the Directorate/ODL Centre

Gombe State University was established in 2004 by the then Executive Governor of Gombe State Alh. Muhammad Danjuma Goje. After more than a decade of its existence as conventional University, the second Vice Chancellor, Prof. Umar Musa Ibrahim established the Directorate of Human Resources Development (DHRD); and appointed its pioneer Director Dr. Dahiru Inuwa Ibrahim. At its inception, the Directorate was mandated to coordinate Diploma and Certificate programmes. Hence, the beginning of Diploma and Certificates programmes in the year 2016 by the University. Interestingly, after the commencement of the Diploma and Certificate Programmes, the National University Commission (NUC) granted the University approval to mount part-time Degree Programmes in 2017. The first set of students graduated during the 2019 / 2020 academic session. The directorate is offering thirteen (13) undergraduate and six (6) diploma programmes now and more programmes are on the way.

Currently, the Director is Dr. Usman BALA. It is our hope that, by our holistic efforts and strict adherence to the University rules and regulations, the Directorate will continue to train and produce graduates that are worthy in character and in learning, who meet up with global standards for the award of degrees by Gombe State University



Philosophy of the Part-Time Programmes

The Part-time Degree Programme is aim at training high level professionals and future leaders in the field of academics, managers, policy-makers and researchers through exposures to broad and complex fields of theories and practices in various fields of human learning as well as enhancing abilities to use research to analyze and evaluate current structures and future reforms of Nigeria.



Contacts, Mode of Instructions & Evaluations

The contacts/lectures are conducted during weekend i.e. on Fridays (2:pm – 66:00pm) and Saturdays (7:00am – 6:00pm) throughout the Semester. The examinations are conducted using conventional testing procedure used in the University i.e. Essay Examinations. In the case of B.A. (Ed) & B.Sc. (Ed) Students, at 100 & 200 levels, the students will be fully engaged in academic work in both the first and second semesters. However, at the 300 level, students will be engaged in full academic work in the first semester but will be involved in the required full academic term of three months teaching practice in the second semester. In 400 & 500 levels the students will be fully engaged in academic and project work.



Operational Setting of the Directorate/ODL Centre

The Directorate started operation in 2015/2016 Academic Session at its permanent site located within the campus of the University by setting up few administrative facilities in its permanent building. Thus interested departments were invited to prepare and submit Diploma curriculums. Consequently, the following Diploma Programmes took effect:

  • Accounting
  • Banking & Finance
  • Business Administration
  • Computer Science
  • Public Administration
  • Library Science
  • Science Laboratory Technology
  • Certificate in Arabic Proficiency
  • Certificate in Health Science & Health Promotion
  • Certificate in Educational Management

It is very imperative to say that, in the 2019/2020 two (2) additional Diploma courses were added, these include:

  • Diploma in Shari'a & Civil Law
  • Professional Diploma in Health Information Management



Objectives of Part-Time Programmes

The various Part-Time Degree Programmes are specifically designed to accomplish the following objectives:

  • Encourage critical thinking through broad based knowledge in the field of Management, Sciences & Education and allied studies
  • Offer challenging but supportive atmosphere for conducting different studies and research and make original contributions to knowledge and scholarship
  • Develop inquisitive and research oriented individuals that wolid be equipped with abilities to meet professional and research needs in various specialized fields locally and internationally
  • Provide avenues for practicing and prospective teachers and administrators to become high level professionals and researchers in various fields of human endeavours



Academic Session

Each Academic session consists of two semesters. Each semester normally comprises at least 13 weeks of teaching and two weeks for examinations.



Duration of the Programmes

All Part – time Degree Programmes are to last for 5 to 6 academic sessions. For Direct entry the duration is 4 to 5 years.
